Curing Multiple Dashboard Syndrome
There’s an epidemic out there. You or someone close to you may have already been afflicted. It’s growing and, for some, it seems like no end to their suffering is in sight. It’s not something that people like to talk about, and so you could even go as far as saying it has become a taboo subject. It shouldn’t be, because this is too important. Nobody should ignore its symptoms, as they will only get worse.
Of course, I’m talking about MDS. That’s right, Multiple Dashboard Syndrome.
Hold on now, it’s not time to click away. While I may have been overly dramatic in the above prelude, this problem is very real. It’s something that mobile product managers experience on some level in their day to day. It may start out as a minor problem, but eventually it snowballs into the dreaded MDS. As a mobile product manager, you may start out using one tool, or perhaps two. You obviously need to have some sort of analytics, so you’ll fire up your favorite flavor of it, right? That’s one dashboard you want to keep a close eye on.
Yet, it doesn’t stop there. You’ll inevitably understand that you are going to need another tool too. Whether it be for attribution, A/B testing, or push notifications, you’re bound to find yourself in front of a different dashboard. More than likely, you’ll try to minimize the time you spend on each of them. After all, you can’t look at all these dashboards all day long. You may start working with two computer monitors, but stretching that up to the three, four, or five will get quite tricky.
Why that many? Well, studies show that most companies use three to five analytics tools to properly manage their mobile app. If you’re a mobile product manager at a company with enough resources, you’ll find yourself in front of many dashboards. Unlike Lord of the Rings, there is no “one to rule them all” here. If this is already sounding familiar to you, you may be well on your way to catching a full blown case of MDS. Thankfully, there are some precautions you can take. While it may be an epidemic, you can prevent a full breakout of MDS by getting at the root cause of it.
If we look at the underlying causes of Multiple Dashboard Syndrome, it will help us find the right solution to this affliction. Now, the precursor to MDS is what I like to call dashboard-a-phobia. This is the stage before you are simply swimming in dashboards with no end in sight. It’s when you start avoiding dashboards like the plague. Yes, you know these tools will ultimately help your app be successful, but you are going out of your mind trying to juggle so many different dashboards. The instinct is to simply avoid them, and only use them when absolutely necessary.
Unfortunately, the result of going this route will be a product that isn’t as good as it can be. Faced with your fate of MDS, you sidetrack and attempt to eliminate the cause of your symptoms. In this case, the victim moves from you as a mobile product manager, to your product. How’s that for making things worse when you are attempting to make them better?
There is a solution, however. It comes with finding a dashboard that will fill most of your needs to begin with, but doesn’t stop there. You want to find a tool that will also allow you to supplement it with other tools you are already using, and do all of that in its own dashboard. Sound like a dream? Well, whether you have MDS or are ramping up there with a case of dashboard-a-phobia, we have the solution for you.
The answer is qualitative analytics by Appsee. First, there are the fundamental, powerful abilities that qualitative analytics put directly at your fingertips. I’m talking about user session recordings, where you can quickly zoom in to the single user level, as well as touch heatmaps to give you an aggregate view of where users are struggling. With qualitative analytics, you can quickly dive deeply into your users’ behavior, and obtain actionable insights for optimizing your app. Think of it as adding a crucial visual layer to go along with the quantitative layer of analytics, both of which Appsee provides. This 1-2 punch provided by Appsee’s dashboard gives you an all-in-one recipe that combats MDS at its core.
If, for some reason, multiple dashboard syndrome isn’t vanquished in that way, you also have the added value of Appsee’s many integrations with other tools. By teaming up with other major players such as Google Analytics, Adobe Marketing Cloud, Crashlytics, Appsflyer, Optimizely and others, you’ll be able to make use of Appsee’s powerful abilities right there in the same dashboard. Some of these integrations allow you to use Appsee’s dashboard to access other products’ data, while others allow you to do the opposite – access Appsee’s user session recordings in other dashboards.
This is a quick way to, at the very least, lessen your reliance on multiple dashboards. You’ll also realize early on how impactful qualitative analytics is, and you may very well end up meeting most of your needs in the Appsee dashboard to begin with, while using these 3rd party integrations only from time to time. That’s a route we have seen many mobile product managers take, and it has become a part of the success of many apps (maybe add “such as 1, 2, 3…” ?)
